Tincture of Bark, or Huxham's Tincture

FEVER: Take of Peruvian bark in powder, two ounces; orange peal, dried, half an ounce; Virginia snake root, bruised, three drachms*: saffron, one drachm*; proof spirits, (rum), two pounds**; steep fourteen days and strain. Good preparation of the bark, taken as a bitter, a teaspoonful to a glass of wine before eating; useful in low fevers.
