Eclectic Emetic

Which is composed of lobelia, and (Ipecac) ipecacuanha*, equal parts, and blood root** half as much as of either of the others, each pulverized separately, and mix thoroughly.

Dose: —Half a common teaspoon every 15 or 20 minutes in some of the warm teas, for instance, camomile-flowers, pennyroyal, or boneset—drinking freely between doses of the same tea in which you take it; continue until you get a free and full evacuation of the contents of the stomach.

*emetic (substance used to induce vomiting). Isolated country folks in the 1800s had to have strong means be able to induce vomiting in cases of poisoning. I include this remedy here for historical interest only - Dont try this at home! Both ipecac and blood root are toxic, dangerous herbs not recommended for home use. Syrup of ipecac is derived from the dried rhizome and roots of the ipecacuanha plant, and was it was once a staple in the first aid kit. The modern home herbalist has much better options such as activated charcoal, and (poison center hotlines)..
