Archaic Herbal remedies
American colonists adopted many healing plants from the Native people and freely mixed that with those plant medicines brought with them from Europe and Asia. Eclectic medicine, flourished in North America in half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries and declined in the 1930s under pressure from the American Medical Association. The early 1900's ushered in a sea change in medicine with increased use of compound chemical medicines that replaced the plant based medicines, and botanicals were dismissed from the US. Much of this information, is from books in the public domain and continues to be of great interest to modern herbalists and others interested in the history and practice of botanical medicine.
